Sowerby Bridge, Ripponden & The Ryburn Valley

The little Ryburn which runs down from the Pennines to Sowerby Bridge once powered the textile mills. Now its peaceful valley is waiting to be explored.

This is the place to come with a road bike. The maze of very quiet by-roads through villages such as Mill Bank , Barkisland and Norland carry very little traffic (bring a map to find the isolated pubs).

Two of Sustrans' national cycle routes, route 66 and 68, come through Sowerby Bridge, with route 68 offering an exciting crossing of the Scammonden Water dam just metres away from the M62 traffic. Sowerby Bridge station, served by frequent through trains from both Leeds and Manchester, can be a good starting place.
