Littleborough & Hollingworth Lake

Hollingworth Lake, once known affectionately as the weavers' seaport, has been a popular place for generations of locals. The lake (a reservoir built to provide water for the Rochdale canal) may not have pounding surf or sandy beaches, but its promenade still carries something of the tang of the seaside.

Conveniently for cyclists, the Pennine Bridleway comes straight down to the water's edge, making use of historic moorland lanes such as Tunshill Lane on its way. Just north of Littleborough, the Mary Towneley Loop of the Bridleway leaves the main route for an extra 47-mile bonus through the west Pennine moors.

Off-roaders can share the Station to Station walk between Littleborough and Marsden with hill-walkers, since the route follows bridleways all the way.
