Otley & The Chevin
The old market town of Otley squeezes itself between the River Wharfe to the north and the 800-foot gritstone ridge known as the Chevin to the south.
The Chevin's main viewpoint is known as Surprise View, and the views down over the Wharfe valley towards the Dales and the North York Moors take your breath away. Even York Minster can sometimes be seen.
The artist JMW Turner was at the Chevin in 1810 during a storm and, according to one story, used his experience later in his painting Hannibal Crossing the Alps.
Like neighbouring Ilkley, Otley has recently become a Walkers are Welcome town and is celebrating in 2010 by launching the new Six Dales way, north into the heart of beautiful Nidderdale.
