Bingley & Airedale

From Skipton the river Aire gradually widens its valley as it passes south through Keighley and Bingley towards Saltaire, the nineteenth century model village and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

There's plenty of choice for walkers, including interesting canalside walking on the trans-Pennine Leeds and Liverpool Canal (Bingley's five rise locks is a favourite destination) and the pleasant charms of Shipley Glen, a popular haunt in the late nineteenth century. Both Silsden and Bingley offer good access to Rombalds Moor, famous for its prehistoric rock carvings. Further upstream, near the villages of Cowling and Sutton-in-Craven, is Earl Crag, equipped with no less than two follies. Just to the south, on remote moorland, is the giant gritstone outcrop known as the Hitching Stone.
